I had no way to truly go about it or know if such a thing were even possibleâ¦I mean, who was I to stand up against something that fed on death? The only thing I knew for sure was when that entity touched my mind and showed me Kurtâs death, I got very pissed off. And as I did so, that stink and that sense of a presence in the room with me vanished very quickly. I had to keep that in mind. Fear was a factor. The more of it you had, the stronger that thing became. The more pissed off you were, the weaker it was.
I heard bitter, sarcastic laughter in my head and it was my own. Listen to you! Just listen to you! Who in the fuck do you think you are to take on something like this? What do you know about hauntings and ghosts and spirits or any of that stuff? You? Mister Fucking Agnostic who doesnât believe in anything?
True. I knew it was trueâ¦then again, what choice was there?
I could pretend none of it was happening, but it wouldnât stop it. It was rolling now and if I didnât do something, fight back or at least make an attempt to derail this thing, it would roll right over me and crush me flat. And who was to say it would be satisfied with just me? Who was to say it wouldnât take Stellaâif it already hadnâtâand then Rachel and everybody else I cared for? In my mind I saw the entityâa nice, safe sort of wordâas a generator that fed upon death and I had to figure out how to unplug it.
But, like I said, I had no idea how to go about it or even how to begin. Thatâs where fate stepped in. Or coincidence. I had unloaded some of the things that belonged to Kurt from the trunk of my Cutlass. A few of his crazy posters, books, mostly albums, hot wax, which I couldnât bear to part with. Having them, I guess, made me feel like he wasnât so far away from me. I sat there in my room, listening to trains out in the yard, and smoking while I looked through the albums. Each one inspired memories that I got lost in for a time. I had about two dozen of them, five of which were mine that Kurt had borrowed. I started making sure that the actual albums were in their respective sleeves. Kurt had a bad habit of putting the wrong albums in the wrong sleeves. I didnât want to find that Hellhammer or Celtic Frost had gotten mixed-up with Favorite Finnish Folk Songs or Ode to Joy with Bagpipes Deluxe. I was glad to see that, for a change, everything was in its proper sleeve.
I picked up my copy of Witchfinder Generalâs Death Penalty with its controversial cover art of the band dressed as 17th century witch-hunters tormenting model Joanne Latham in a churchyard, her charms on full display.
